McKinney and illustrator Daniella Ferretti on a thrilling journey to the mysterious, dark world of the deep sea, where fascinating creatures make their own light!
What a gorgeous nonfiction picture book! Its facts about deep sea creatures will capture kids’ interest for sure. The text is full of details that are explained in a lovely, lyrical voice that’s perfect for the book’s quiet, almost mysterious mood. The illustrations are spectacular, taking full advantage of the book’s vertical format to show and emphasize the gradual change from light to darkness as the eye moves from the water’s surface to its deepest, darkest depths. I especially love the book’s invitation for kids to interact with the text. Kids can lift flaps to discover extra information about the featured sea creatures. The art’s colors are amazing, rendering the bioluminescent creatures more accurately than I would have thought possible (I’m a scuba diver and have seen underwater bioluminescence, albeit shallower than what’s featured in this book.) Even though I live far from the ocean, I’ll have this book on hand this summer, to read with my grandkids when the fireflies’ bioluminescence sprinkles the night with flashes of light. I highly recommend this book.
